What Is The Federal U.S. Law Concerning Unmanned Aircraft Systems?

Federal U.S. law concerning unmanned aircraft systems allows for more than you actually think. Since the use of drones for asset inspection is a relatively new endeavor, it’s important to know if your company is onside with the law or not. When you hire a company to help you inspect your energy, infrastructure, real estate, or agricultural assets, you want to make sure that the operation is being conducted within the law.

In late September and early October of 2018, the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate passed the Federal Aviation Administration Reauthorization Act, which was subsequently signed into law by President Trump. Typically, new government legislation is not something to get excited about, especially in fast-growing and undeniably promising industries like ours. The law actually helps drone manufacturers, suppliers, and software makers by better integrating UAS units into the airspace that they must share with larger aircraft. This law is great news for the drone industry, and for BrainChild Innovation. That is why many people in the drone industry are pleased with this new legislation.

Still, with every new piece of legislation there have to be people who are unhappy right? Well, the people who won’t be happy are people using drones for evil purposes (to harm the public), people using drones near restricted areas, people trying into invade the privacy of others, and people trying to watch live outdoor sporting events and concerts for free. That’s it. Now do you see why people using drones for commercial purposes, or companies using them to do inspections, are pleased? Beyond outlawing certain bad uses of drones, the law creates the right parameters that allow the proper use of drones to flourish.

If you would like to read the law for yourself, and we definitely suggest that you do, you can do so here: Federal Aviation Administration Reauthorization Act of 2017 Title II, Subtitle A—Unmanned Aircraft Systems Reform.
